What I’d Buy if I Was Starting My Home Fitness Journey from Scratch

Starting a home fitness routine can feel overwhelming with all the gear out there but you really don’t need much to get real results. If I had to start from scratch today this is exactly what I’d buy. No fluff, no overpriced junk just the essentials that actually work and keep you consistent.

A Good Yoga Mat

Use it for: Stretching, bodyweight workouts, core exercises

If you’re working out at home, a mat is the first thing you need. It gives you a comfy, non-slip surface for all kinds of moves from stretching to push-ups. Make sure it’s thick enough to protect your knees but not so soft you sink into it.

Long Resistance Bands (Set of 3 to 5)

Use it for: Strength training, stretching, mobility

These bands are super useful and easy to use. You can do pulling exercises, help yourself with stretches, or use them to work on your posture. They are light and easy to store.

Dumbbells or a Kettlebell

Use it for: Getting stronger, quick workouts, full-body training

If you want to build strength at home, this is where to start. Dumbbells are great for all kinds of exercises. Kettlebells also give you lots of movement options like swings or carries. You don’t need both so pick whichever fits your space and budget.

Pull-Up Bar for Your Door

Use it for: Upper body strength, hanging core work, shoulder health

Even if you can’t do a pull-up yet, a bar is still worth it. You can use it to hang which helps your shoulders and back or use a band to make pull-ups easier while you build strength.

Sliders

Use it for: Core training, lunges, bodyweight workouts

These make simple exercises harder in a good way. You can slide your feet or hands on the floor to work your core, legs, and balance. They are affordable, easy to use, and great for small spaces.

Use it for: Quick cardio, warm-ups, full-body conditioning

This is an easy way to get your heart rate up and improve your fitness without needing a lot of space. It costs less than a treadmill and is more fun than running on the spot.
